Erotic Book Review

Five Days, a novella by By Simon Jacobs and Amanda Woods

reviewed by DelovelyOlive

What would you do if you only had five days left to live?

That is the premise of this sexy little literary nugget, dropped from the Goddesses of the OC Press into our waiting and wanton hands. A delicious ice-cream cone, if you will (with a few kinky sprinkles), that’s guaranteed to be a tasty treat for all you erotic lovers out there.

Aside from the title, which hooked me right away, I was visually seduced by the cover art. Gazing down at the glossy picture, my eyes feasted upon a pair of footprints in the sand, a shimmering ocean lapping the shore, a glowing sunset in the distance, and a pair of nameless lovers framing the dreamy scene with their black silhouettes; it was as if the picture itself was whispering in my ear… read me, I’m romantic…

Well I did, and it is. So here’s the scoop (no pun intended).

Though out of touch, Sam and Alicia have had an infatuation with each other that has been simmering since high school, and chance meeting in a coffee shop reignites their unconsummated passion. Sam drops the bomb that he only has five days left to live. This announcement changes the course of their fated relationship and is, in a sense, like throwing gasoline onto long-burning embers. Now, determined to make up for lost time, and also to make the most of what time he has left, Sam and Alicia set off on an erotic adventure that could either break their hearts, or fulfill their wildest dreams.

Intrigued? I thought so.

To me, each chapter was like a journey in and of itself, exploring the “what ifs” of the couples’ past, while simultaneously making each second of the present count. Within each moment of their precious time together, a discovery is made—the discovery of hidden passions lying dormant inside their souls, and their willingness to trust in each other with their passions’ fiery release. Each day is another experience through which their intimacy deepens; yet, even with their time running out, love begins to bloom. Of course, this only makes the inevitable future more difficult to accept. And with the fear of Sam’s death looming darkly in the distance, each touch, each taste, each coming together is intensified with an animalistic urgency. As their bond grows stronger, the more fierce their desires become, and the idea of a future without the other more unbearable. It’s as if they are literally trying to out-fuck destiny!

Sam and Alicia’s characters are slightly vague, but ultimately believable. Sam is the shy, awkward boy who endlessly fantasizes about, but never dares approach, the wildly attractive and popular Alicia—the kind of girl he can only dream of having. Alicia is the talented, artistic girl that likes to tease Sam by flaunting her budding sexuality in his face just because she can. The history of their classic high school connection is the cornerstone of their regrets and long overdue romance, and is revisited throughout the piece.

Both characters are described as being young, beautiful, and flawless, and have just enough emotional depth to keep you from rolling your eyes. Because of the story’s plotline, the characters are given permission to behave with reckless abandon, and boy, do they ever take advantage of that allowance. There is hot sex on practically every page, ranging from the sweet and sensual, to the rough and frenzied. It is vividly descriptive without being raunchy. And most striking is that, despite the constant rush of non-stop sex, the integrity of the story remains one of innocence and romance. There is a definite aura of sweetness about these two lovers, even as they push each other to their sexual limits and beyond.

One of my favorite lines is, “The final binding of two restless spirits that had, until recently, been wandering the planet alone searching for one another” (p.46). Sigh…Ok, so maybe that was a little bit cheesy, but I loved it. And I think you will too.

Overall, this Novella, even though a quick read, leaves you with a sense of completion and satisfaction, and in my opinion, is worth every page!
