Erotic Book Review
Summer Loving by Lydia

First thought: Not what I was expecting. I couldn’t quite tell based solely on the title and the cover art what I was getting myself into as I began to read this book. I guess I just imagined that the beautiful girl staring seductively up at me was going to have one hell of a sexually exciting summer (which of course she did) assuming in my mind though, that this would envelope a very wide range of erotica. Much to my surprise, this book was much more um…shall we say, specific.
Summer Loving takes place during the 1960’s, a time when corporal punishment was widely accepted and practiced, (hint, hint) in schools by teachers or in public by furious parents without the fear of someone calling child protective services on them. The book centers around a young girl named Lydia, age 18 but still in high school (which I found to be a little bit creepy but hey at least she is of legal age) and her journey of self discovery through many humiliating and stimulating punishments, I mean ah…experiences.
At this point, you may have gathered what the main theme of this book is, but if not, allow me to enlighten you. This book is about getting spanked, plain and simple. So if you are into getting your round rump reddened by kitchen spatulas, leather straps, rubber soled slippers, rulers or wooden handled brushes (just to name a few from the book) then you will most certainly enjoy this book. Or if you happen to be the strong authoritarian type that likes to be the one from behind dueling out the discipline you will probably also LOVE this story. Me on the other hand, not so much.
Aside from this just not really being my cup of tea, the story itself just sort of fell flat. Let me try to explain. You see for me, reading a book is a lot like embarking on a journey. As you begin, the scene is set, you are introduced to the characters, (or as I like to think of it, meeting your travel companions) you are presented with conflicts or whatever it is that the characters must rise above and overcome, or maybe the story is asking you a question, giving you a fresh perspective to ponder throughout your voyage. Then, as you set off sailing into the thick of the story, the adventure unfolds, the plot thickens and the real excitement begins. At this point, you become emotionally invested; you fall in love with the hero, (or heroine) hate the villain, or at the very least, cling to some connection you can relate to in the characters that you are getting to know. You begin to care about their choices and what will happen to them, in short, you can’t put the book down! And at last, like all good things, it comes to an end, the conclusion is drawn, conflicts resolved, questions answered and perhaps something learned. You (the reader) close the book with a sigh feeling satisfied.
Okay, so maybe my expectations are a little high, (and why shouldn’t they be?) but this story simply failed to engage me. There wasn’t much of a plot and no real climax (the other kind). Lydia is a very interesting character; one that I felt could have been better developed emotionally. I really wanted to like Lydia, to understand her, why does a good beating from a woman in power make her so wet? I wanted to get inside her head so that maybe once there I could possibly find something that I connected with, therefore enjoying her spankings as much or even just a fraction as much as she did. I also wanted the relationships between the characters (Lydia and her girlfriends) to have more depth. Unfortunately for me, I found all the characters to be pretty one dimensional.
There were many unique intimate situations that I felt would have been infinitely hotter had there been a few more details there to fan the flames. I know some people read erotica to get right to the good stuff! And don’t get me wrong there is plenty of good stuff; I guess I just like a bit more um…foreplay.
I will say though on a positive note that the descriptions of the spankings were quite detailed, (I could almost feel the welts rising on my ass as I read). There seems to be quite an art in the way of paddling, a method in the rhythm. The author definitely did their research! From the sounds different objects make as they fall against the flesh to the tempo of the beating on each cheek, thigh and everywhere in between. I loved the descriptions of color and pain, the heat of freshly slapped skin and the acute sensitivity to touch it has afterwards. There is something intensely erotic about being so vulnerable which this book more than delivers. I also liked the soothing and healing that came after a good sound spanking. In those moments I found myself thinking, “oh yeah this is getting good!” Wish there had been a little bit more of that!
So in closing, although Summer Loving did not sweep my off my feet or move me emotionally, it was still an erotic experience, but one I think would best be enjoyed more by someone with those specific tastes.
I feel like I haven’t been very nice to this book, maybe even a little bit mean and mean girls ought to be punished right? I think I need to be taught a lesson! Hmmm…how should I be punished…maybe if I bend over my desk just like so…and lift up my skirt ever so slightly like this…are you ready??
Happy spanking!
